So this year I hit the big four-oh. Society would have me believe that I can only regain the excitement and vigor of youth by buying a Harley, wearing tight jeans, loud shirts, and purchasing hair dye products. But you know what?

I can’t be bothered. Meh.

This week’s strip was one of those times when I overheard a snippet of a conversation and a situation popped into my head. I fully expect most people to be like “wha…?”, but it worked in my GRATE BRANE when I came up with it.

I thought I would try a less time-demanding inking method – fast brushy swooshes instead of my usual OCD solid line with many overinks. I think it worked ok, although I might try a slightly thicker brush next time. Saved me a whole mess of time though, and also made inking fun again.

I know, I know, it’s been like, a million years since the last comic strip proper. But that’s the way with us frilly-sleeved, foppish creative-types – sometimes the mojo just buggers right off. And when you aren’t able to draw, there’s not a lot you can do, sadly. If you have come back after all this time to find this, then we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, bless you.

But that is sorted now. We have a few scripts lined up and ready to go, so here’s hoping this is a return to our normal schedule. Don’t forget, there will be quickie strips during the week too, to keep you happy and floaty light!

Hidden in this weeks Avoid Spikes comic is a massively ridiculously hyper-obscure Doctor Who reference – if you can find it and are the first to add a comment to the strip saying what it is and where it comes from, you’ll win yourself the pick of the dogsounds store!

Here’s the basic rules:

• The competition is open to anyone, anywhere, except me and Mart. This is kinda obvious, really.
• The winner is the first person to add a comment to the 04/04/2010 strip stating what the reference is, and where it comes from.
• People I work with cannot get hints or clues from me when we go back to work, not even if bribed with TEH FOODZ or DAVEBREWS.
• The winner will receive an email confirming that they have won, and will need to reply providing their mailing address and stating which 1 (one) item from the dogsounds store (excluding the cameras) they want as their prize.
• Prize will be delivered within 28 days.
• The winner will not be charged for the prize or shipping, but because some countries suck local customs or duty charge may apply depending on how crappy your country is with import tax and duty.
• Once you have your prize, use it well and be awesome. No returns, no refunds!

All I can say is: titles and theme tune shit, everything else fucking awesome. Matt Smith is so good that I forget that he has a head the size of most normal people’s entire body. He presents a nice, eclectic mix of a number of doctors, most notably Two, Four, Nine and Ten. And young Tottie McFitPiece as Amy Pond (come on, admit it, you can’t remember her name either, and companions are only there for the teenage and maybe slightly older than teenage attention spans) played a blinder as a companion with the brass to stand up to the Doctor when needed.

It looked great – a side bonus of filming in HD is that SD looks much better – and Murray Gold’s music was spot on as always. Well, apart from the gag-reflex inducing theme, which is just shameful (it’s actually worse than the music they put on the Doctor Who Confidential programmes).
