MS also have controller news. Also with a helping of suck

Not to be outdone by Sony, Microsoft have also unveiled some controller goodness. Except this goodness is the kind of goodness that sucks ass.

From Eurogamer at Leipzig 08 comes this story of a new 360 controller to be released 24th October. Looks the same? Pretty much. But it has what many, many gamers have been asking for for a long time – a D-Pad that actually works. But, you haven’t heard the bad news…

Gamers have decried the uselessness of the 360 D-Pad since the console launched. Try playing any arcade title that needs it, or games with controls assigned to the pad and see what we mean. I lost count of the number of times I used the pad for specific weapon mapping in Doom 3 and kept having to continually press the damn thing until it realised I was pressing up, not left.  Allegedly, the new improved pad can register 32 directions of movement, rather than the existing 4, and MS says:

“The new limited-edition green wireless controller offers enhancements to d-Pad functionality, which will add to the experience of playing games where the d-Pad is the primary control mechanism,” Microsoft told Eurogamer.

“We’re always looking to improve products and we made these changes based on feedback from gamers.”

So, finally, we get a pad that works? Well, no.

See, for some unknown reason, this is a limited edition controller. That only comes with Pro Evolution Soccer 2009. And only works with that game. And only in limited territories (i.e. not Northern U.S.).

What. The. Fuck?

“a limited edition promotional item that is only available in Europe, Asia and Latin America while supplies last”

So, gamers ask and ask and ask for this, MS shows that it is possible, and limit it ridiculously? I don’t get it. Admittedly, it may be a patching issue, as Eurogamer spoke to another developer who suggested it may eventually work with Street Fighter IV and therefore turn up again, but that makes it sound like the game has to support it. Man, if only Microsoft had some kind of network where users could interact and download patches. You know, some kind of Live setup, for Xbox…psssh.

I love Microsoft comedy:

“We’re always looking to improve products and we made these changes based on feedback from gamers.”

I guess it is all the fault of those gamers who screamed for a good D-Pad but ONLY IN TEH RESTRICTED NUMBARS!!one one!! and ONLY WID TEH FOOTBOLL GAMEZ!!eleven!!

Guess there must be a lot of them about.
